I draw the attention of all Punjabi's of
Pakistan living in Pakistan or abroad to what the ‘Punjab Digital Library’
operating from Chandigarh tells us about
itself and its work:
What is Punjab digital mission?
The mission of the Punjab Digital Library (PDL) is to locate, digitize, preserve, collect and make accessible the accumulated wisdom of the Punjab region, without distinction as to script, language, religion, nationality, or other physical condition.
PDL is dedicated to:
Addressing heritage loss due to environment, ignorance and destruction
Saving invaluable treasures to enrich the present and enlighten the future
Connecting people globally by providing continued free online access
Why Digitize?
(1) Securing heritage for future generations
(2) Limitless life span of digitally preserved material
(3) Wide availability through internet and easily searchable
What comprises the invaluable heritage of Panjab?
Manuscripts, books, official records, newspapers, miniatures, murals, periodicals, paintings, pictures, architecture etc are all are being digitized at PDL.
What has PDL already done?
PDL started digitization of historical texts in 2003. Millions
of pages were launched online at www.panjabdigilib.org on
the 20 August 2009 for public use. To date, PDL has digitized over Eight
million pages from different manuscripts, books, newspapers, magazines,
photographs, etc
With support from hundreds of supporters and the Sikh
Research Insitute we have served government departments, museums, universities,
libraries and a number of personal collections.”
I believe this is sufficient for any Pakistani Punjabi
who is concerned about his heritage to begin work on similar lines for Pakistan
part of the Punjab. I intend to begin this work at the earliest, therefore this
website.
